Melvin Douglas Zoerb was born in Lexington, Nebraska in 1949 to Melvin and Norma Zoerb. He graduated from Lincoln Southeast High School in 1967. In September 1969, he married his high school sweetheart, Karen Marchange, shortly before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps.
Doug completed recruit training at MCRD San Diego, followed by Advanced Infantry Training and Scout Sniper School at Camp Pendleton, California. During this time, Doug and Karen welcomed their first child, Kimberly, while he was still in training. Doug met his daughter for the first time when she was three days old and was able to stay home until she was one month old.
In May 1970, Doug deployed to Vietnam, returning home in March 1971, one day before Kimberly’s first birthday. He served as a Scout Sniper with Golf Company, 1st Marine Division. His service earned him the Combat Action Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Rifle Sharpshooter Badge. In addition to sniper training, Doug was educated in land mine warfare and the Vietnamese language. Vietnam was a defining chapter of his life, though one he rarely spoke about.
After returning from Vietnam, Doug completed his tour of duty at Marine Corps Air Station El Toro in California. He accepted an early release from service in August 1971 and returned with his family to Nebraska. Doug attended the University of Nebraska, earning a degree in Business Administration in May 1974.
Doug and Karen raised three children: Kimberly, Nick, and Michael, and later welcomed seven grandchildren. Doug built a respected career in banking, working in Geneva, Milligan, and Lexington, Nebraska. In 1984, he was hired by Roy Dinsdale as President of Pinnacle Bank in Shelby, Nebraska. In 1992, the family moved to Gretna, Nebraska, where Doug continued his leadership as President of Pinnacle Bank. He was widely respected by his peers, the Nebraska Bankers Association, and Sarpy County business leaders for his integrity, compassion, and vision.
M. Douglas Zoerb passed away on May 27, 2015, after battling ALS. He had previously endured heart disease and cancer, all conditions later recognized as service-connected due to Agent Orange exposure in Vietnam. Despite these challenges, Corporal Douglas Zoerb remained deeply proud of his Marine Corps service.
He would be honored to know that the Marine Corps League Detachment chartered in Washington, D.C. proudly bears his name. The members of the Cpl. Douglas Zoerb Marine Corps League Detachment #1466 live the meaning of Semper Fidelis. They remain always faithful, including in their continued care and support of Doug’s widow.
